Find the nearest wire transfer service such as MoneyGram or Western Union office or an international bank such as HSBC. Call ahead to find out what identification you’ll need to present. Most offices and banks will accept a passport, driver’s license, national identity card or other government-issued identification. You may also be required to provide proof of address, such as a bank statement or utility bill.

Visit the office or bank. Complete the necessary forms and give them to the agent along with the money you want to send and the transfer fee. If you’re using a bank, you’ll generally have to transfer money from one account to another; the recipient may have to have an account with the bank.

Write down the reference number you’re given. If you’re at a bank, make note of the transaction number.

Contact the person to whom you’re sending the money and give her the reference or transaction number. In most cases, the money will be ready to collect in minutes.

The main factors to consider are exchange rates, fees and the speed with which your friends, relatives or business partners can pick up the money in Sri Lanka. Register and take advantage of your chosen site’s strengths. Remit2Home offers a one-click money transfer service to your recipient’s bank account; Kapruka (Lanka.info) offers a home delivery service and doesn’t require a bank account; and US Lanka boasts more than 100 collection points in the major towns and cities of Sri Lanka. If you use ATMCASH, the company will send the recipient a prepaid ATMCASH card via FedEx, and you’ll get the secure PIN code via the mail. The recipient can then withdraw the money at any ATM in Sri Lanka that accepts MasterCard using his ATMCASH card once you provide the PIN.

Sign up or register with a wire transfer service. Tell the service who to send the money to and how much to send. You can use your credit card or checking account.
